From 21 to 23 September 2023, the WWR European Championship – Division C will take place in Lignano Sabbiadoro (Italy).

The event is organised by the Italian Federation of Paralympic and Experimental Sports (FISPES) and it will feature 4 national teams: SWEDEN, IRELAND, AUSTRIA, and ITALY.

The LOC is happy to welcome the competing teams and very pleased that World Wheelchair Rugby has awarded this event to the city of Lignano Sabbiadoro.

"Welcome to Wheelchair Rugby and the European Championship hosted in Italy. As a nation, they are a strong partner within the Paralympic Movement. As such, Italy will be looking to develop and strengthen wheelchair rugby and this can be demonstrated by their commitment to host this event and also an increase in the number of club teams and athletes. In wheelchair rugby, Europe is the largest zone and it is testament to the growth of the sport globally that we now operate three leagues as part of the overarching European Championship. Whilst the teams competing may be considered developing, you will get to see some great wheelchair rugby and I've no doubt some competitive games. As this is Division C it is the start of the pathway towards the World Championship and Paralympic Games. Be assured that the athletes are "Here to Win" and this is why it is the strong message that World Wheelchair Rugby have integrated within its brand. If this is the first time you have seen wheelchair rugby then you are in for a treat. It is a full contact sport and the noise that the chairs make as they collide will stay with you forever. Our sport is more than strength, it is also about tactics and agility.

"We are proud to host the European Championship of Wheelchair Rugby Division C, a chance for us to provide our movement with the opportunity to see international competitors up close and stimulate the growth of our clubs.

I am certain that this will be a chance to push even harder in our promotional efforts to bring as many young people with disabilities as possible to this discipline, which is mainly dedicated to those with particularly severe disabilities.

Our goal is to win in order to move up to the top series, a level that is already within our grasp and that we were unable to reach last year when, due to logistical organisational problems, we had to forgo participation in the 2022 European Qualification Championship.

I hope that everything proceeds in the best possible way, especially as a reward for the great preparation work carried out by the athletes and the technical staff, with the support of the entire administrative and political staff of our Federation.

I would like to thank BBRAUN, which stood behind this journey as a faithful companion, along with all those who will collaborate for the success of the event: the referees and the table officials, the volunteers and last but not least the WWR who placed their trust in us.
